Stalled on your Estill Certification? Try this.
Feeling stuck in your Estill Voice Training certification journey? Don't worry, you're not alone! Many candidates hit a plateau at some point. Here's a strategy to get you back on track and accelerate your progress:
1. First Things First
We've found that breaking down the figures into categories based on visibility and function can be super helpful. Start with the "Seeables" like Lip Control and Jaw Control - these are easier to master because you can see what you're doing! Then move on to what we call: "Phonation Station," (i.e. TVF Onsets/Offsets, TVF B/C) the "Elevators," (Tongue and Larynx) "Tilts," (Cricoid and Thyroid Cartilages) and “Unpacking Nasality" (i.e. AES and Velum). Note: These are not official Estill Voice Training categories but they are helpful ways of grouping concepts for students of Tom Burke Voice Studio.
2. Group Qualities by Figure Conditions
When working on qualities, group related qualities and focus on this sequence to accelerate your mastery.
-
Speech and Falsetto: These are “sister” qualities that differ only by onset and TVF B/C.
-
Siren, Nasal Twang, Oral Twang, Sob, and Opera: These qualities can all be assembled with the 7-Part Figure.
-
Belt: This is the final quality to master, as it requires a solid foundation in the other figures and qualities.
3. Tackle Common Problems
In your Level One & Two workbooks, you will find a list of common problems and solutions for each figure and quality. Be sure to review those common pitfalls as you practice with Estill Voiceprint Plus and apply the recommended solutions. If you get stuck, consider attending a Figure Practice Group.
4. Practice Makes Proficient
Spend 1-2 weeks practicing figures in each category. Consistent, focused practice is key to mastering the Estill system. Use a combination of practicing with Voiceprint, practicing in the mirror and silent practice to accelerate your practice. Remember: Short, focus, randomized practice sessions of 2-3 concepts throughout the day are better for motor learning than long sessions focused on one thing.
5. Find a Mentor
